NO.5 A.F.P.U Illustrated London News - 7/10/44 - Oosterbeek - Arnhem
Sergeant Dennis Smith of No.5 AFPU landed by glider on the 17th September 1944 at the start of Operation Market Garden, the airborne operation to capture the bridge over the Rhine at Arnhem. Smith joined the men of 'C' Company 1st Battalion Border Regiment, dug in along the Van Lennepweg at Oosterbeek (cover). He also photographed the company commander Major William Neill. One exceptional image is of the 3" mortar team of no.23 Mortar Platoon, support to the Borders.
Smith also photographed Major General R.E Urquhart outside his HQ at the Hotel Hartenstein.
On the night of the 24th Smith, who was wounded, crossed back over the river by boat to safety.
