Frank Scherschel documents the training of the 342nd Bombardment Squadron, 97th Bomb Group, 8th Airforce which was formed and trained at Mac Dill field (Feb-Mar 1942) before deployment to England.
Schershel concentrates on crew of a B17E 'Flying Fortress'. The crew is commanded by Pilot, Second Lieutenant F.W Dallas, he remained with 97BG and won a DSC in January 1943 when the group were operating out of North Africa.
The radio operator, shown squeezing into the ball-turret was S/Sgt H L Langhofer who was killed on the 17th April 1943 over Bremen, when Sky Wolf II of the 91st Bomb Group was shot down.
Scherschel also crossed over to England and continued to document the 8th Airforce, he flew on bombing raids on Normandy on D-Day.
