W Eugene Smith photographed the initial landings of 3rd /4th /5th Divisions of the USMC in Operation Detachment, the invasion of Iwo Jima on February 19th 1945.
Smith documented the landing beaches where the Marines met stiff japanese resistance. The resulting images reproduced over four pages in Life revealed the battle from the point of view of the ordinary marine.
