W Eugene Smith LIFE 2nd June 1972 Minamata Japan
W Eugene Smith documented the plight of the people of Minamata, a fishing village on the island of Kyushu Japan. The bay had been polluted with mercury discharged by local industries. Smith characteristically immersed himself in the project, renting a house in the village and being hospitalised during a demonstration outside the factory gates.
