W Eugene Smith's photo essay 'Spanish Village' was a departure from the strict narrative constraints of his previous work. Smith documents life in Deleitosa, a small rural town with an ancient traditional way of life. Nothing appears to have changed for centuries. The inclusion of the portrait of the three Guardia Civil militiamen hints at the contrasts between the old and new Spain.
