Humphrey Spender spent his pre-war years at Picture Post documenting British Cities.

With the outbreak of war, his attention was turned to the Home Front . In this article he photographs the WAAFs barrage balloon operators. In 1942, WAAFs were tasked with taking over jobs previously done by the Army and the RAF. Senior ranks had questioned whether the WAAFs were capable of these heavy duty tasks.

Spender documents the training and the WAAFs in action.
