Capa landed on Easy Red, Omaha Beach with the men of the 16th Infantry Regiment of the US Arny 1st Division. After the infamous drying-cabinet incident, only 11 0f the 108 original frames were salvagable. Life Magazine reproduced 10 of the 11.
The sodler in the surf, photographed by Capa, has recently (Times 29/9/07) been positively identified as PFC Huston Riley of F Company, 2nd Battalion, 16th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division. Hugh Riley, now 86, whilst wounded recalled how Capa pulled him ashore.
