Leonard McCombe Front Line Doctor Picture Post 7th October 1944

This Leonard McCombe photo essay, entitled the 'Frontline Doctor', is an intimate document of a Regimental Aid Post behind the frontline in Normandy in 1944. His sensitve portrait of Major James Lendrum Nicol, MC of the 130th (Wessex} Field Ambulance, Royal Army Medical Corps, appeared on the cover of Picture Post.

This unit of the RAMC formed part of the 43rd Wessex Division who were involved in heavy fighting for Hill 112 in Normandy.  Major Nicol and his men were the first to assess and treat battlefield casaulties.
