W Eugene Smith Saipan Life 28th August 1944

W Eugene Smith and Peter Stackplole documented the fighting and 'mopping up' operation on Saipan in 1944.

In the leading photograph of the article, three men were killed in the instance before this photograph.

Saipan was the first Island where the U.S.M.C. encountered Japanese civillians, who were caught in the fighting.

The aritcle includes Smith's iconic image of the soldier cradling the injured baby found abounded outside a cave on Mount Nafutan.
